DULUTH TO SCHROEDER

Our first scenic overlook.  Reminds me of coastal Maine

Had to stop to take pictures of the old firetruck and cars

Stopped in Two Harbors as they have a Lighthouse, but they also had a small Railroad Museum.  It was closed but got to see the outdoor exhibits

and a Tug Boat!
 and some Canadian Freighters
The Lighthouse and the Crusader II

It was built in 1939 by Rueben and Helmer Hill for Carl Erickson and christened in Knife River by the reigning Crown Prince of Norway during his visit to the North Shore. The 35-foot fishing boat is an example of the herring tugs that worked these waters for decades. The enclosed design allowed fishermen to fish well into the winter until the lake froze over.  Commercial fishing was a large part of the North Shore economy until the invasion of the sea lamprey in the 1950’s nearly destroyed the fish populations on the Great Lakes

Apparently you can stay at the Lighthouse - too bad - no vacancy!
 Next stop Silver Creek Cliffs
Do I have to go Mom?  I'm afraid of heights!

Highway 61 used to run right alongside the cliff where the scenic overlook and bike trail are now.  They blasted through the Cliff .

A picture of the road during construction.  Traffic was never stopped during the construction.

The next scenic overlook gives us a good view of Split Rock Lighthouse.  Another park to explore in more detail this summer.

Next we stop at Gooseberry Falls State Park as it's been a whole day since we've seen a waterfall

Can I go swimming here Mommy?

What a beautiful place!  Can't wait to explore further!

So many other places to stop along the way but the weather is turning and it's time to get "Home"

We're here!

The office

 Game Room
Riverside Cottages

 Lake front campsite

The Bakery/Sub Shop / Pizza Shop just next door - uh oh.
