Getting closer. Ahead of schedule so trying to slow down a bit. Take a little detour to Apostle Islands National Seashore. Not much there unless you are a kayaker, and there were people out kayaking. I guess there are ice caves you can kayak to. Interesting reading about kayaking up this far north. Lake Superior is renowned for its cold temperatures, rough seas, fog, and sudden squalls.
Average water temperatures in May and June are only in the 40s. Even in late summer, surface temperatures rarely exceed 60 degrees. There is a concept called the 1-10-1. When you are submerged in extremely cold water -
you have 1 minute to get back your breathing.
You may have 10 minutes of meaningful movement to perpetuate self-rescue.
You may have 1 hour before becoming hypothermic and losing consciousness
The people I saw were in pretty big thermal suits.
Anyway not much to see so we continued on to Superior, WI . I had researched a lighthouse to see just before Superior, the Wisconsin Point Lighthouse. Good thing because the only marker for it at the main road was a little brown sign that said historic marker.
Drove six miles down a bumpy road.
There is an Indian Burial Ground nearby
Duluth MN is just across the bridge. Will wait to gas up there as it is .15 a gallon cheaper
Went to Walmart to spend the night but found it littered with no overnight parking signs so had to back track to Superior for the night. Chilly dropped down into the 20's.
The next morning we braved the cold morning and drove to Canal Park in Duluth as someone at the dog park had said it was a must see. Well thank goodness parking was free as it was extremely windy and cold!
Only in the North Country!
Poor Tucson - he could have a looked a little happier for this shot
Hard to see in the picture but there were 4-5 foot swells coming in the channel
Darn and I was hoping to take a quick dip
Too bad they weren't open a deep fried cookie dough and hot chocolate would have gone down good!
Enough cold wind - now up route 61 to our final destination, Lamb's Resort in Schroeder,MN only 80 miles to go!
