Our week off! Plans change because Gary has a gout attack so we are not going to pull the 5th Wheel somewhere else this week. We have errands to run in Seward and Gary wants to see a doctor to get a prescription for the gout.
It's a beautiful day and the scenery is spectacular coming and going
We have driven by this scenic turnoff for two months but now I am in the driver's seat!
Glad we waited! The lupines are in full bloom.
We get to town and drive to Lowell Point. You drive by Lowell Creek Falls which empties right in the Bay
The drive is a narrow gravel road that follows the bay
Lowell Point has a beautiful view and a small beach for soaking in the sun or launching kayaks or small boats
This one must be waiting for the tide to come up
A good view of the Bay and downtown Seward on the return trip
Gary goes to the hospital to see about getting medication for his gout. It sits at the base of Marathon Mountain. People run up this mountain 4th of July weekend. The race goes to the top 2974 feet above sea level. The total race distance is about 3.1 miles.
Leading racers will typically reach the peak from the starting line in
33–40 minutes, and reach the finish line from the peak in 10–15 minutes.
Average speed uphill is 2 mph. Average speed downhill is 12 mph. It is
not uncommon for the racers who finish to cross the finish line injured
or bleeding and covered in mud. Ironic or convenient that the hospital is at the base.
While he waits to see a doctor, I head to town.
There are a couple dozen Murals throughout the town. Here's a mural of the Marathon Mountain run.
It's a small Main Street but has lots of restaurants and gift shops
and a couple of nice churches
We stopped at Safeway on the way out of town to pick up a few things and saw this convertible truck - cool!
Gary has been wanting to drive down Nash Road as he has heard there is good fishing down there. It is also a pretty scenic drive.
We hit the end of the road. There is an oil derrick here. I would hate to see one of these go up in the Bay and have a Deep Horizon incident again.
Down the side dirt road next to it is a popular fishing spot.
A nice first day off! Tomorrow we head to Hope, AK I hope!
Wow! It looks like you and Gary are having a super time. Dan and I only had 1 day in Seward, and 1 week on land. We then spent 1 week on ship, going through the fjords. We would love to return to Alaska.
