Guernsey, WY - Oregon Trail wagon Ruts and Register Cliff

We leave Cheyenne and head to Guernsey, WY where there are wagon tracks left over from the Oregon Trail as well as a cliff where people carved their names as they passed through.

The weather is iffy as we hit the road, storms in the distance and 58 degrees
We get some rain but it clears as we reach our destination
We found a small campground at a municipal golf course
 We get settled in
 Right on the Platte River

We have a quick lunch and head out
There is a nice paved trail through the site

Some of the ruts are 4 feet deep through the rocks

Not far away is Lucindy Rollins Grave.
Her grave is one of the oldest single graves in the area.  Believed to have started her journey in Dayton, OH, she died in in June of 1849.  She was probably on her way to California.

From here we head to Register Cliff - 2 miles away and run into some more ruts

 We make it

There are lots of names but it seems they are all 1960's or later
Tucson and I head further down

This cave in the cliff base was blasted to store potatoes raised on a ranch as the stone walls insulated the produce.

Further down the trail there is a chain link fence protecting the signatures on the cliff from graffiti.

an interesting bit of history

Cheyenne, WY - Wyoming State Museum

The Wyoming State Museum is just a couple blocks away from
the Capitol Building so we walk over.

First thing we are greeted by is a Buffalo
and a few other locals
as well as those no longer with us

an Idea in case we want to downsize
Indian artifacts

and an old yellowstone tourist carriage

We head back to the truck and pass by the Veteran Memorial
One last trip across the Bridge by the Railroad Depot and Yard

We had hoped to get into the Roundhouse and Steamshop but they are both closed due to Covid 19
Maybe we'll be back - just not during hail season!

Back on the road tomorrow!

Cheyenne, WY - Capitol Building and Governor's Mansion

Gary finished repairing all the vents so we are headed out tomorrow.  Going to do some sightseeing today.

1st Stop is the Capitol Building

It was built in 1887
The interior was recently renovated

The Senate Chambers

We head to the House of Representatives' Chambers across the way.
We pass the 4 Sisters statues, Truth, Justice Courage and Hope

If only our leaders followed these

The House of Representatives

Beautiful building.

We are told the Governor's Mansion is nice so we go see.

In 1901 the Wyoming Legislature approved $40,000 to build the Mansion
It was completed for just over $33,000, including landscaping and furnishings.
