We leave Cheyenne and head to Guernsey, WY where there are wagon tracks left over from the Oregon Trail as well as a cliff where people carved their names as they passed through.
The weather is iffy as we hit the road, storms in the distance and 58 degrees
We get some rain but it clears as we reach our destination
We found a small campground at a municipal golf course
We get settled in
Right on the Platte River
We have a quick lunch and head out
There is a nice paved trail through the site
Some of the ruts are 4 feet deep through the rocks
Not far away is Lucindy Rollins Grave.
Her grave is one of the oldest single graves in the area. Believed to have started her journey in Dayton, OH, she died in in June of 1849. She was probably on her way to California.
From here we head to Register Cliff - 2 miles away and run into some more ruts
We make it
There are lots of names but it seems they are all 1960's or later
Tucson and I head further down
This cave in the cliff base was blasted to store potatoes raised on a ranch as the stone walls insulated the produce.
Further down the trail there is a chain link fence protecting the signatures on the cliff from graffiti.
an interesting bit of history
