Escalante, UT - Hole in the Rock Road

Not far down the road is Hole in the Rock Road.
It is a dirt road that runs 57 miles from Escalante to Boulder, UT.

A stop at the Hole-in-the-Rock Heritage Center

Tucson is raring to go!

From a letter from a Pioneer woman to her parents
regarding the descent down Hole-in-the-Rock Road

The last wagon down in a group of 40 wagons on January 26, 1990.  Joseph Stanford Smith had been told all 40 wagons had made it down safely, but he couldn't find his own wagon.  He climbed back up and found his wagon and family waiting.  No other men had remained on top to help brake the wagons descent.  His wife insisted she and their horse  could restrain the wagon.  She placed the children on a quilt and told them to stay until their father returned.

Together they started driving the wagon down. The horse fell dragging behind the wagon, the wife then fell and was dragged 100 feet gashing her leg before the wagon stopped.   Smith climbed back up to the top and found the children waiting where they had left them.   The worst of the trail behind them, the family continued down together.

Why did the cow cross the road?
To get to the other side silly!

After 17 miles, we reach our planned destination - Devil's Garden

We pull into the parking lot

and find Hoodoos, Arches and other Sandstone creations.

We decide to continue down Hole-in-the-Rock Road a little further.

Let's see where this goes

A Trailhead to some Slot Canyons.  Too late to venture in today.

But we take a short walk to a viewpoint

We'll definitely be back.

We decide to head back.  Another find cow specimen.  Tucson was especially excited about this one.  Maybe because it was the same color.

More interesting landscape along the way

A really nice drive.  We plan on taking it to the end at some point and will bring the Tent for the Truck Bed and spend the night.
