Big Bend Day 2 - Ernst Tenaja

Today we head out to see the Ernst Tenaja.  It is one of the gems of the Park and accessible by 4WD only.  The ranger said it is only 2 miles in so I talk Gary into taking his baby on another dirt road.

Looks like it's only one lane too
I figure it would be 30 minutes as we are only able to do 5-10 miles and hour.
On July 19, 1932,  Juan de Leon was shot and killed while riding his horse. His body was not found for several days, and was so decomposed from the hot July sun that he was buried where he fell.

Finally, the road to the Tenaja

It is overcast so not too hot to hike
 The trail follows a wash
The wash has "waves" of stone

Up ahead, the geology gets more intereseting
There is a group of 8th graders here on a field trip, Gary stops to chat with one of the chaperons and looks dwarfed.
The Tenaja - a 13-foot, natural rock pool, also known as a ‘kettle.’  When full, it provides easy access to water for animals.  When water level drops and animals try to reach down or jump in, the smooth limestone walls are too slippery for them to escape.  Many animals and at least one human has drowned here.
Del Rio Clay shale surrounds the pool - it is amazingly diverse in color

A look back to the direction we started from
We checked on the way back and it was just over 4 miles .  We finally reach the main road.
The Kayaks had started to come loose from the bumpy ride so Gary secures them.

Next stop - Chiso's Basin
