We only traveled 65 miles from Guadalupe Mountains to Van Horn, TX as the forecast was for rain and high winds. A chance to chill and get caught up on things like laundry. A nice clean park and it was half price through Escapees.
We wake up to a beautiful sunrise
We reach Presidio the gateway to Big Bend State Park - the less famous brother of Big Bend National Park
Our first good glimpse of the Rio Grande
And here we are at Big Bend State Park.
We get to a sign for the Visitor's Center but it says 27 miles and it's a
dirt road. I'm thinking that can't be right - and a car stops to ask
if we need help. He confirms our instincts are right and we continue straight ahead
It's a bit of a roller coaster ride
The road follows the Rio Grande
We stop to check it out here - guess we won't check out Mexico here
After 3 months in Arizona, it is nice to see water in a river
and we mosey on down the road
Didn't see that coming
Gary quickly pulls over so we can catch the view from the top
View looking back
and what lies ahead
Makes you feel small
and the road goes on for what seems forever
We come across this really cool rest area
and the roller coaster goes on
A view across the Rio Grande to Mexico
Gaining on Big Bend National Park. It is Saturday so we don't want to go in tonight, figuring it is probably full so we stop at the Visitor's Center here to inquire about places to stay. We are told Big Bend is full and I am reminded it is a holiday weekend so my plan to arrive early Sunday as weekend warriors are leaving is possibly run asunder. Meanwhile a guy overhears us and offers for us to stay at his RV Park under construction in Study Butte about 10 miles from the Park entrance.
We take him up on it. Water and electric is nice. While we were there another RV pulled in and asked about staying as everything else in town was full. We told them we were giving the owner $20 and we were sure he wouldn't mind another $20.
Plan is to get up early and get to Rio Grande Village campground before 10 a.m.
