Big Bend - Kayaking in Santa Elena Canyon

Big Bend is a Big place and everything is pretty spread out.
  Almost there!
It is a couple hundred yard walk to the River via boardwalk and sand path

We get both kayaks down by the water and watched as a couple of canoes tried and tried to get launched against the current and into a strong headwind.  They finally made it and we set off.  It was tough but easier than I expected, I say myself being swept downstream back to the campground!
The 1500' canyon walls tower ahead
About 15 minutes in we find a place to pull into shore and have lunch.  This is about as far as the hiking trail goes in.

 Reinforced we continue on
The canyon walls change color and texture
You have to keep paddling or the current and winds carry you towards the walls
You wonder what's around the next  bend?
The current has gotten really strong at this point so we ground ourselves in some silt and get out for a rest.
We decide to just pull the kayaks to the next bit of land instead of fighting the current and wind
We park them here and walk a bit
The canoes that went in ahead of us are just repacking their gear from lunch here.  It is a 3 day expedition down the Canyon.  We get a good view of Smugglers Cave too

We watch the paddle boarders struggle to continue on and decide to head back as we have other things we want to see on the drive home

So we begin the easy drift back

The 2.5 hour trip up takes 25 minutes to get back

Loaded back up and ready to continue the adventure

What a fantastic experience!  Now we can check out some views on the way home . . .
