Today we check out Colonial Pemaquid and
Fort William Henry State Historic Sites
and it couldn't be a more beautiful day to do it.
Tucson's raring to go
The fort was in its time the largest in New England. The first fort on this site was Fort Charles a wooden stockade structure built in 1677 and
destroyed in 1689 by native Americans allied with the French. A second Fort, Fort Williams, was built in 1692 but destroyed four years later by New France in
the Siege of Pemaquid. Fort Frederick was built in 1729 and abandoned in 1759.
This reconstruction was built in 1908
The Boulder inside the bastion is a remnant from
the last ice age 12500 years ago.
The Indians who attacked and destroyed the 1st fort - Fort Charles - hid
behind this rock. When they rebuilt the Fort they added a Stone Tower (Bastion) around it. Munitions were stored down here.
Upstairs housed troops
and now a museum
Up top the views are great!
The stone foundations are original walls from the original Forts. The restored Federal-style
home dates to 1790
Pemaquid Harbor
A drive down the Pemaquid Trail
We drive up 130 back to Damariscotta for lunch and to see some historic sites along the way plus I had seen a consignment shop I wanted to visit.
The historic sites along the way were pretty lame and we ran into roadwork
When we got to Damariscotta, the consignment shop was closed for inventory today. That left lunch.
Lobster for me of course!
Swordfish Steak for Gary.
Good day!
