We start our journey up Route 1, the Alcan Highway. We Hope to get to Cache Creek and the connection to Route 97, the Cariboo Highway and pull over for the night.
I think Mom would be happy that I've gone to Yale
There is a series of 7 tunnels here.
Sometimes two in a row
Welcome to Hell's Gate - we won't be staying long here. There is an airtram that takes you 500 feet down the river to a cafe on the other side. It is the narrowest point on the Fraser River and this section of road and railroad was the most difficult to build. It is pouring rain so we make a note to stop here on the way out.
Not really Boston, not really a Bar
We catch views of the Fraser River
and some really long trains
on both sides of the River
Spences Bridge so we are closing in on Cache Creek
We got through Cache Creek a little early so we continued on to Clinton and stayed at this nice little park for $20 U.S. cash.
We ask the owner for dinner recommendations as the all you can eat BBQ here doesn't start until next weekend. He recommends the Chinese restaurant across the street. We check out the menu but neither of us is in the mood for Chinese to we decide to walk to the center of town. It starts raining just as we get to the Cariboo Lodge so we duck in.
Good choice. I had the Potato Wedges and Honey Garlic wings and Gary had the Lasagna. It was really good.
And a cold one hit the spot after a long rainy day of travel.
We are pleasantly surprised how nice the highway is so far, we have heard so many horror stories. Tomorrow's goal is to make it close to Prince George where we will pick up Route 16, the Yellowhead Highway. Hopefully we will have better weather and continued good roads.
