Back on the Road and we pass through Quesnel. It began as a supply town for minters during hte Cariboo Gold rush. It ha the world's largest goldpan, measuring about 18' in diameter and weighs almost 31,000 lbs.
Quesnel sits at the confluence of the Quesnel and Fraser Rivers. A park here has a replica of a Cornish water wheel and a cairn commemorating the Collins Overland Telegraph - the first telegraph link in B.C.
Just down the road we hit the 108 Mile House Heritage Site. There is a rest area right next to the site so we stop to check it out
It is closed for the season but we can walk around the outside of the buildings.
There are 13 historical buildings including structures from the old 108 Mile Ranch and Roadhouse.
It started as a post house on the Cariboo Trail in 1867. It became a horse and cattle ranch in the 1900's and it was logged in the 1950's
A display of Farm equipment
Must have run out of gas
No! You can't make me!
A view of the outskirts of Chasm Provincial Park.
An option of taking the scenic route to Vancouver. Sounds like a beautiful drive except for the section that is 2 lanes without many turnouts and long steep grads with narrow winding road and hairpin turns and another section is a high rainfall area which could translate to snow. So we go the way we came via 1
We plan on pulling over for the night around Cache Creek. Not much is open and the one campground is right on the highway. I find a municipal campgound in Ashcroft which is 4 miles east. We head there so we will have a quiet place for the night. We find it is a steep winding road down to Ashcroft
But is is like a whole new world. It is high desert.
With some difficulty, we find the Park by the River and back in and go to plug in only to find the electricity and water are turned off. There is no one around and no pay station so I guess it is free. It is not however quiet as there are trains behind us
and trains in front of us
It is however a pretty spot on the River
We should reach the US of A tomorrow!
