Decided to go down memory lane and visit Weeki Wachee Springs State Park - home of the Mermaids.
“Weeki Wachee” means “little
spring” or “winding river.” from the Seminole Indans. The spring is so deep that the bottom has
never been found. Each day, more than 117 million gallons of clear,
fresh 74-degree water bubbles up out of subterranean caverns.
Gary finds one right of the bat - but she gives him the cold shoulder.
We just missed the 11:00 Mermaid show so we go the the Wilderness River Cruise
A lazy ride down the river alongside the kayakers and a couple paddleboarders - referred to as open face sandwiches for the Alligators
The Herons are building a nest somewhere
Next we stop by the Wildlife Show where we see some of the local snakes, turtles and alligators
Colorful Peacocks roam the property
As do a couple not so colorful but beautiful as well
We arrived for the 1:30 show at 1:00 and the line is already tremendous. I overhear some one say if you weren't on the other side of a pole ahead of us you wouldn't get in.
We hang in there and get in.
Weeki Wachee was created in 1947 by stunt swimmer and attraction promoter Newt Perry, who based the show on underwater air hose breathing techniques.
It became a State Park in 2008
The current at the depth the mermaids swim runs at 5 mph so it is quite a feat to stay in one place
The show we see is The Little Mermaid. The first show Fish Tails they perform underwater feats from the past decades including eating and drinking under water.
The Little Mermaid celebrates her birthday and comes face to face with
her Prince who has fallen into the ocean. Yearning to have legs like him, she makes a deal with the
sea witch to give her what she wants in exchange for her beautiful
voice.
She rides in on her sea horse
Live turtles get into the show and photo bomb
and there's something fishy here
The current where they perform is 5mph so it is quite a feat for them to stay in place let alone perform
The Sea Witch
The little mermaid gets her legs
and of course they live happily ever after.
In 1982, Buccaneer Bay was opened with water slides, a lazy river, and a white sand beach. A little to cool for me to use - but there were some diehard kids in there.
