We have a short drive today to the Escapee Park in Summerdale, AL. Staying there for 4 days as we are having a portable solar panel being shipped to the Walmart nearby. Mobile is half way and Gary would like to tour the USS Alabama so off we go.
Tunnel vision
We arrive just before they open
Which is good because they don't have RV parking so we make our own
The Ship and propeller
It is a huge ship and the self guided tour is broken up into 3 sections, yellow, red and green
The yellow tour takes you up top, starting at the main deck
We get to go up to the top deck and get quite a view
Uh Oh. Looks like we have a gunner on our tail
You walk through engine rooms
The Battle Bridge where during battle the Captain commanded the ship behind 16" armored plates
Once again we need no stinking stairmaster - but a hard hat might come in handy
The Captain gets the plush quarters
and Officers get a nice dining room
A few charges for the missiles
and Missiles
Sick Bay
The Flag flown when at Battle
Next we go to visit the Submarine - USS Drum
We go below deck, but I wonder why the Flag before us is just the Blue Section with Stars?
This is a bit more claustrophobic than the Alabama
A cozy kitchen
And they have an Ice Cream Machine!
Gary takes aim
A quick run through the airplane hangar. The Tuskegee Airmen
Bombers with a sense of humor
War displays. Soldiers received socks from the Vietnamese and used them t make a Christmas tree out of them
There are more planes on display outside, like this B-52. I never realized just how big they are!
A tribute to the Coast Guard
We spent almost 4 hours touring about and didn't see it all, but time to move on.
