After 5 nights in Columbia having a nice visit with Gary's sister and family, it is time to mosey on.
North Carolina
The plan is to make it to the Virginia border and overnight at the Visitor's Center Rest Area. Half way is break time and I find Fort Dobbs on the map not too far away so we decide to check it out.
While Gary rests his eyes, Tucson and I take a little hike.
A nice hike in the woods
We get to a point where the trail leads to these stairs that lead to a gully. I think it's time to turn around
The Visitors' Center
It is part of the Daniel Boone trail
They are in the process of reconstructing a replica of the original Fort. The Thickness of the Walls which are made of Oak Logs go from sixteen Inches at the base to six at the 3rd floor, They didn't have cranes back then.
Some remnants of the log walls
Fort Dobbs was the only permanent frontier provincial fort in the colony
of North Carolina. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed
one year later. They started the new one in August of 2016 and is expected to be completed Spring of 2019.
How the Fort will look when completed. They photo shopped it into a picture of the grounds in the background picture
We continue on and are greeted with Spring in the air
We get to the rest area only to find out the parking area for trucks and rvs only has a dozen parking spots. Not wanting to take away from tractor trailer drivers we move on. I have seen that a VFW in Hillsville allows overnight parking for $10 night for Escapees so we head there.
It is a huge parking lot all fenced in. The office is closed and no one answers the phone. We talk to a woman walking her dog and she says if is fine to park overnight and that it is safe. There are 20 acres of land behind the VFW which is used Memorial and Labor Day weekends.
The Hillsville Flea Market consumes
the entire town of Hillsville
I lost my pictures but there are over 1,000 flea market spots just here at the VFW.
