Forecast is for on and off showers today. There seems to be a lull so we head off to do 2 hikes. We drive to the trail heads because the trail to Cedar Falls is 2.5 from the campground and it is another 3 miles to Ash Cave from there, and we don't want to risk getting caught in a downpour.
1st Hike is Cedar Falls
In a place with Hills in the name it is a given
that there are going to be stairs involved.
Looks like a right turn here
In 1998 a 100 year flood hit this area. As it ripped through the gorge, it destroyed almost all the man made structures. When this bridge was rebuilt the decision was made to use the bent steel girders that remained as a reminder of what will come again some day. Hard to see in the picture but the bridge has a slight curve to it now.
You can see how deep this gorge was carved by water over the years.
I can hear the Falls
Cedar Falls is the most abundant Falls in the Park in terms of sheer amount of water. It got it's name from early settlers who mistook the stately Eastern Hemlock for Cedar Trees.
Gary trying to decide whether to go up to the Rim Trail or back over the bridge.
Back over the bridge we go. I am in awe of all the green. The moss on this fallen tree is a neon chartreuse, the picture doesn't do it justice.
back up the stair-master
