Yesterday with Dorian passing through was a bust. We drove into Bar Harbor to see an urgent care as Gary had developed a large red circle on his back . Concerned with Lyme Disease I got him in to have it checked out. Turned out to be Cellulitis so they prescribed antibiotics but also ran tests for Lyme.
It's a beautiful day today so we drive over to the
Southwest Harbor side of the Island
It is a lot less congested than the Bar Harbor side
Our first stop is Echo Lake
Very peaceful - no crowds at the Beach today.
Except some Loons
Next is a very short hike to Carroll Homestead
It represents a Coastal Maine Farm of the 1800's
We arrive in Southwest Harbor a cute little town
It's low tide in the Harbor
We continue on and drive over the natural sea wall
I walk across the road for some pictures - Tucson
keeps an eye on me.
Looking back to the Seawall
All this rock is quartz
There is this lovely marsh pond on the side we parked on
We stop at the Ship Harbor Trail as it looks to be quite short.
Gary and Tucson wait in the truck.
A pretty trail - but not so short. It is a mile round trip
My favorite stop - Bass Harbor Lighthouse
I saw people below on the rocks so I found the trail
which lead to this stairmaster down
a scramble out on some rocks
and a good shot of the lighthouse. Had I had better shoes on I would
have ventured down closer to the water but hadn't planned
on any hiking today.
I've worked up a big appetite for Lobster so we head
for the infamous Thurstons Lobster Pound
We arrive only to find it is closed on Sunday!
We find this little place in Seal Cove.
I get the Lobster Dinner
and Steamers - Yum! Gary is not a Lobster fan and that is all they offer
here and his stomach is off from the antibiotics he is
taking so he just watches me pig out.
A short distance away is Seal Cove
I see signs for Pretty Marsh so we turn down that road - it is pretty but
it ends at a picnic area with no view of a pretty marsh.
Though I catch this shot driving by further up the road.
It was a nice day. I feed Gary at home then we head to Town to gas up. We stop for ice-cream on the way home and then join neighbors
for a campfire. We weren't sure if we would be able to
continue to Nova Scotia after Dorian took a direct hit on it
but finally heard from our friends that they were fine and should
have power back in a couple of days so we stick with our plan.
Nova Scotia or Bust tomorrow!
