January in Jekyll Island

Well since I am playing catch up with this Blog I will condense each month here on Jekyll Island

So here goes the rest of January

Across from the campground entrance is the road that goes to Clam Creek Picnic Area and Fishing Pier.  It's a nice walk about 1.5 miles.  The road is lined with Live Oaks draped in Spanish Moss.

There is a holding area for the horses you can ride on the Beach

Tucson makes friends

Nice to see the Bait shop has a sense of humor

There are Pelicans and Dolphins

and then there are the big ships that come through

A nice place to catch the sunset too!

The bike trail goes from the Pier through the Salt Marsh so I decide to see where it goes.

Past an Egret

 and a bunch of Juveniles

Must be a popular Teen Hang-out

 Some interesting trees

I think it should have been named Oyster Creek

February is just around the corner!

Savannah is such a great city but of course it is still raining!  I stop and take a walk in the rain because Tucson needs some exercise.

Overnight at the Walmart and while I'm trying to read a book the lights dim and go out.  No lights, no heat - battery is dead and it's supposed to be chilly tonight.  I bundle up and wait for morning then head over to the nearest Batteries Plus store as I had just bought this battery in Myrtle Beach.  They check it and yep it's dead.  I guess 3 nights running it in the cold weather without much driving between stops did it in.  They were nice enough to put it on a rapid (3 hour) charge and  I was back on the road.   Only an hour and a half from Jekyll now.

Next Stop Hunting Island State Park.   It drizzled the whole time I was there so just did a quick beach walk and viewed the lighthouse.

It's off to Jekyll Island GA!  I want to scope out  Charleston, Edisto Island State Park ,Charleston and Savannah along the way.

It is pouring rain when I pass through Charleston.  I did stop at Charlestown Landing State Historic site and walked around in the rain but it was too wet for my camera.  I continued on to Edisto Island State Park, again it was raining so just drove through.  Everyone at Myrtle Beach had raved about this Park but I did not see why.  One the way out the rain had let up so I did squeeze in a tour of Botany Bay Plantation.   Lucked out because the next day it would be closed for hunting.  Almost made it through dry but the sky opened up on the way back to the RV and I got drenched.

The 4,630-acre plantation on Edisto Island was a gift from the Margaret Pepper family. It was given to the state in 1977 by Mr. Pepper, but was only able to be used after his wife passed away so she would have the opportunity to continue her years on the land she loved, as per her husband's request.

In July 2008, the land - now a Wildlife Management Area operated by South Carolina's Department of Natural Resources - was made open to the public.
