Fort Thompson to Sioux Falls - Corn Palace

We head to Sioux Falls and of course must 

stop in Mitchell to see the Corn Palace

 No, it is not made completely out of Corn. 

Built in 1892 the Corn Palace was created to display the products of the harvest of South Dakota's farmers, via murals on the outside of the building. The murals are made from thousands of bushels of corn and other grains and grasses such as wild oats, rye, straw, and wheat. Each year these corn decorations are completely stripped down and entirely new murals are created.

There was a small fair going on inside.

Then we are back on the road.  We pass a welcome center which has a 50' steel sculpture called Dignity of Earth and Sky.  Created by Dale Claude Lamphere, it depicts an Indigenous woman in Plains-style dress receiving a star quilt. According to Lamphere, the sculpture honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples who are indigenous to South Dakota.  It is impressive even from the highway
